The Ultimate Curly Hair Routine
No matter your hair type, if you’re here, reading this, you’re probably just like us - always on the lookout for the next product or adjustment to their routine to get their best hair yet. So today, we’re sharing our best practices for curls: perfect whether you're a seasoned curly hair enthusiast or just beginning to embrace your natural curls. Is there anything brand new you haven’t heard here before? Maybe not. As Miranda Priestly definitely said: “Sleep protection curls? Groundbreaking.” But actually, great hair isn’t necessarily about the next new product or technique, it’s about finding what works best for you, then doing it consistently. Here’s what we’re doing… consistently.
Cleansing: Start with a Gentle Shampoo
Curly hair tends to be drier than straight hair because the natural oils from the scalp take longer to travel down the coiled strands. Therefore, it's essential to use a sulfate-free, moisturizing shampoo that won't strip your hair of its natural oils.
Shampoo once or twice a week: Over-washing can lead to dryness and frizz, but your hair does need water, so don’t avoid washing for too long, either.
Focus on the scalp: Use your fingertips to gently massage the scalp, which helps to remove buildup and stimulate blood flow without tangling the curls.
Conditioning: Deep Hydration is Key
Conditioning is crucial for curly hair. It helps to detangle, moisturize, and define your curls.
Use a rich, hydrating conditioner: Look for products with ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, or argan oil.
Detangle while conditioning: Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to gently detangle your hair while the conditioner is still in.
Deep condition regularly: Once a week, use a deep conditioner or hair mask to give your curls an extra boost of moisture.
Drying: Handle with Care
Drying curly hair correctly is vital to avoid frizz and maintain definition.
Blot, don’t rub: Use a microfiber towel or an old t-shirt to blot excess water from your hair. Rubbing can cause frizz and breakage.
Air dry or diffuse: Air drying is the gentlest method, but if you're in a hurry, use a diffuser attachment on your blow dryer. Keep the heat setting low to medium to prevent damage.
Styling: Define and Protect
Styling products help to define your curls and protect them from the environment.
Leave-in conditioner: Apply a leave-in conditioner to damp hair for extra moisture and protection.
Curl cream or gel: Use a curl-enhancing cream or gel to define your curls and reduce frizz. Scrunch the product into your hair starting from the ends and working your way up.
Defining tools: Of course, we believe that Curl Definer is THE best tool to use to define your curls and minimize frizz. But, you can also use combs, brushes, or your own 10 fingers. The key is tension to create curl clumps, then…
Avoid touching your hair: Once styled, let your hair dry without touching it to prevent frizz and preserve your curl pattern.
Maintaining: Night Care and Refreshing
Maintaining your curls between wash days ensures they stay defined and frizz-free.
Contain your hair: Minimize friction by containing your hair for sleep. This can be done a number of ways like pineappling (gathering hair into a loose, high ponytail on top of your head - we love to do this with Silk SlipTie), wearing a bonnet, or our beloved Sleep Sleeve, coming back and better than ever, soon!
Sleep on a silk pillowcase: A silk or satin pillowcase reduces friction, helping to maintain your curl pattern and minimize frizz.
Refresh curls: In the morning, use a spray bottle filled with water and a bit of leave-in conditioner to revive and reshape any flattened or frizzy curls.
Protecting: Weather and Environmental Factors
Curly hair can be sensitive to changes in weather and environmental conditions.
UV protection: Use hair products that contain UV filters to protect your curls from sun damage.
Humidity control: In humid conditions, anti-humidity sprays or serums can help to control frizz.
Protective styles: Consider protective styles like braids or buns to reduce exposure to harsh weather and minimize breakage.
Achieving gorgeous, healthy curls is all about understanding your hair’s unique needs and treating it with care and respect. By following this routine, you can embrace your natural texture and enjoy the beautiful, defined curls you’ve always dreamed of. Remember, consistency is key, so stick to your routine and give your curls the love they deserve!
